What is Move-In Ready?
Move-In Ready: Your Guide to First-Time Renting (or second, or third) is a full-color workbook designed to help renters navigate the apartment-hunting process from start to finish. It covers everything from touring and applications to move-in, roommates, red flags, scams, and more. It’s filled with advice, reflection prompts, activities, and downloadable forms—all in an approachable, conversational tone.
Who wrote this book?
The book was written by Amy Whitehouse, a leasing professional with over 20 years of experience in the multifamily housing industry. She’s worked both on the vendor side and in property management, helping thousands of renters through tours, applications, renewals, and everyday apartment living.
Amy is a self-proclaimed “Mom with a clipboard who actually reads the fine print,” and she’s spent her career answering questions most renters didn’t even know they had.
Why did Amy write this book?
Because renting shouldn’t feel like a mystery.
Amy has spent over two decades renting apartments and working in the multifamily industry. Over the years, she saw the same questions come up again and again—questions that too often went unanswered. This book came from my deep belief that renters deserve more support, more education, and fewer surprises. This is the book she wishes she had when she started renting.
The idea first took shape when Amy helped her Uncle Jim with his own apartment search. She sent him a wildly detailed list of questions to ask during his tour—and that list is now included in the book.
What makes Amy qualified to write this?
Amy has helped everyone from first-time renters to downsizing retirees, from recent graduates to long-time residents looking for a fresh start. She knows what landlords are looking for, how to avoid the most common renter pitfalls, and how to translate confusing lease language into plain English.
She’s toured thousands of apartments, sat in hundreds of meetings, and worked with renters from every walk of life. Her advice is practical, real-world tested, and delivered with compassion and clarity.
Is this book connected to a specific apartment or company?
No. While Amy currently works in property management, Move-In Ready is a completely independent project. The views expressed in the book are her own, based on personal experience and general industry practices. It is not affiliated with any specific property, landlord, or company.
What makes this different from other renter guides?
It’s full color and workbook-style—you can write in it, interact with it, and make it your own
It includes checklists, activities, and reflection sections to help readers engage more deeply
It comes with downloadable forms you can use digitally or print out, especially handy for eBook readers
And it’s written in a voice that’s real, relatable, and friendly—not corporate or condescending
